DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – On Tuesday, the Superior National Forest closed a portion of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) due to a wildfire.
The forest order closure includes the Sioux Hustler Trail loop and campsites on Agawato Lake and Shell Lake until further notice.
The Shell Lake fire, thought to be human caused, is about a half acre in size and has the potential to spread to the east.
Most of northern Minnesota is facing drought conditions with federal and state firefighters responding to several human caused wildfires in recent days.
Because of large wildfires still occurring in western states and resources being used to support hurricane response efforts in the southeast, personnel and equipment for fire suppression in the northland is limited.
The Forest Service national Preparedness Level was increased to the highest level (5) on Tuesday.
