ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – Ice conditions around the region have changed rapidly over the last week.
Warmer weather, rain and wind have degraded the ice and brought a quick end to what the DNR says was a good ice season.
DNR Conservation Officers and public safety partners were involved in at least three rescues of people and recreational vehicles going through the ice in the past ten days.
Spring ice may appear thick but can’t support the same weight as it could earlier in the season.
Warmer days can also deteriorate ice quickly and a path on the ice that was good on the way out in the morning may not be safe for the return trip in the afternoon.
Those who risk going out on the ice should have ice picks and wear a life jacket or float coat. The DNR also recommends going with a buddy and let others know where you are going and when you plan to return.
