TOWER, MN (KDAL) – On Sunday evening, the St. Louis Sheriff’s Department received a report of snowmobiles going through the ice on Lake Vermilion near the Tavern on the Bay.
Four snowmobiles were involved with four adults and two juveniles able to make it back on the ice with the help of patrons and employees of the tavern.
Five of the six who ended up in the water were taken to area hospitals for treatment of exposure.
The snowmobiles went through the ice near a pressure ridge that had formed on a marked trail near the location.
The Sheriff’s Department reminds snowmobilers to use caution at all times and avoid questionable areas on lakes with unknown ice conditions.
